When I started my design journey, I thought I needed a big budget to get going. But over time, I realized something simple: You can run a design business for free—or really close to it.

Let’s look at what most people spend their money on:

Alcohol: $50

Junk food: $100

High-end clothing: $500

Now, check out your design business:

Free software: $0

Free marketing on platforms like X (formerly Twitter): $0

Networking online: $0

I always think it's important to have a book or guide when you go through your journey, regardless of whatever journey you go on.

When I decided to take lots of trips across Europe, I packed light and had a copy of Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel by Rolf Potts on Audible.

Just having a mentor to take me along my journey made a massive help.

Obviously when it comes to design environment, the issues you're going to have will not be with designing, you're already creative and you will make cool things.

The problem you have is with selling. I don't know any other book that speaks about selling your design work like mine does, so I would recommend you pick up a copy of: The Designer's Guide To Money: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Successful Graphic Design Business by JaffaBranding

I know it’s easy to think you need more money to grow your business, but you might not need it at all.
